General

It was opened in 1980 by then Governor General Sir David Beattie. The first principal was Colin Prentice, followed by his executive Allan Macdonald. The current principal is B J Bentley.

Whanau (Family) System

Macleans was the first public school in New Zealand to use the Whanau House System - dividing the school up into 'houses' of about 300 students each, with two classes of 30 or so students for each year level. The eight whanau houses are named after famous New Zealanders: Batten, Mansfield, Rutherford, Hillary, Kupe, Te Kanawa, Upham and Snell. The oldest house is Hillary, although it was rebuilt after it burnt down. More houses have been added as the roll has increased, with the latest addition being Upham, which was opened in 2003. It has a strength of 2,500 students.
