* 1887 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway consolidates eight of its subsidiary railroads in California into the California Central Railway. * 1892 – The last broad gauge train runs on the Great Western Railway mainline out of London's Paddington station.

20th century

* 1926 – The United States Railway Labor Act becomes law.
* 1963 – The Rutland Railroad, in New York and Vermont, ceases operations; the right-of-way is officially abandoned after ICC approval earlier in the year.
* 1970 – The Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) relinquishes its interest in 44-mile (72 km) Tijuana and Tecate Railway Company to Mexico's national railway, Ferrocarril Sonora Baja California, S.A. de C.V.
* 1984 – The Metrorail opens in Miami, Florida. There is free service from Dadeland South to Overtown/Arena to entice residents to ride.
