Clarence Edward Crowther was the sixth

Bradford on4 March 1929 he was educated at theUniversity of Leeds , where he obtained a BA in 1950, LLB in 1952, and LLM in 1953 and at Cuddesdon College for one year (1955/56). Deacon in 1956 andPriest the following year. After a period as a CollegeChaplain in the United States he rose rapidly in the church's hierarchy, becoming Dean of St Cyprian’s Cathedral, Kimberley inSouth Africa , [ [http://stcyprians.itgo.com/ Cathedral History web site] ] and then its Diocesan Bishop in 1965. Two years later he was expelled from the country for his opposition toapartheid . In 1970 he returned toCalifornia as Assistant Bishop and obtained a doctorate, later published as a book, at theUniversity of California in 1975 for his research on the treatment of the terminally ill.
