Philip William Wheeldon (1913 - 1992) was the fourth
Bishop of Whitby [The Times , Tuesday, Nov 09, 1954; pg. 10; Issue 53084; col C "New Bishop of Whitby"] and subsequently the two timesBishop of Kimberley and Kuruman [ The Times, Monday, Dec 11, 1967; pg. 14; Issue 57121; col E "New Bishop of Kimberley"] . He was educated atClifton College andDowning College, Cambridge andordained in 1938. After a Curacy atFarnham he served as aChaplain throughout theSecond World War [Who's Who 1992 London,A & C Black , 1991 ISBN 0713635142 ] . When peace came he was successivelyChaplain to theArchbishop of York [ Crockfords,(London, Church House 1995) ISBN 0715180886 ] , General Secretary of the "Central Advisory Council on Training for the Ministry" and finallyPrebendary ofWells Cathedral before elevation to the Episcopate in 1954. After 7 years at Whitby he was translated to Kimberley and Kuruman. He served twice asBishop , retiring once through ill health but returning when his successorClarence Edward Crowther was deported. In retirement he served as anAssistant Bishop , firstly in theDiocese of Worcester and latterly at Wakefield. s-startNotes
