- Zittel Cliffs
Zittel Cliffs (coord|80|40|S|25|59|W|) is a set of
cliff s rising to about 1,400 m in the northwest part ofDu Toit Nunataks ,Read Mountains ,Shackleton Range . The feature was surveyed by theCommonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition , 1957, photographed from the air by theU.S. Navy , 1967, and further surveyed byBritish Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1968-71. In association with the names of geologists grouped in this area, named byUnited Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1971 afterKarl Alfred von Zittel (1839-1904), Germanpaleontologist who specialized in the study offossil sponge s.
