The National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM) was founded in 1990 by Catherine Oppenheimer after NDI's first founder Jacques d'Amboise visited New Mexico. The people at NDI-NM put on a huge 500 kid show in Santa Fe every year the first week in May and the last week of April some of NDI's shows are... 100 years of American Music and Dance, Route 66 Legends of the Road, Got Jazz, READ! a Celebration of Reading, and What's the BIG idea?. Since 2003 NDI has had two advanced teams the S.W.A.T. (Super Wonderful Advanced Team) and the Celebration Team in that year NDI formed the Xcel team. In 2008 the NDI folks introduce the Junior XCel and XCel apprentice teams.
Since 2003 NDI has been housed in a large building with 2 large studios that can become a theater and 4 smaller studios, and because of the size NDI dacided to host Broadway Theater Dance Workshop a two week musical theater intensive for ages 14–20 and it's a nationwide thing so visit www.btdw.org for information. BTDW has had guests such as Ann Reinking, Tommy Tune, and Patricia Birch.
In 2004 NDI formed S.P.A. or the School for the Performing Arts since then a lot of kids have joined NDI's pre professional teams. In 2006 the people of S.P.A put on their first musical Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and in 2007 S.P.A. put on their 2nd musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The 2008 musical was Bye Bye Birdie. In both 2007 and 2008 S.P.A. did a balletic version of An American In Paris. For 2009, Artistic Director Tim Santos decided not to do a musical. Instead, there was a huge Radio City Music Hall style Christmas Spectacular titled Home For The Holidays
NDI-NM is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico on 1140 Alto Street. Near downtown Santa Fe.[1]
