The River Erne ( _ga. Abhainn na hÉirne or "An Éirne"), in the northwest of
Ireland , rises fromLough Gowna inCounty Cavan , flows throughCounty Fermanagh and ends inBallyshannon inCounty Donegal . Theriver is 120kilometre s long and is very popular forfly fishing destination fortrout andsalmon , with a number offisheries along both the river itself and itstributaries . The town ofEnniskillen is mostly situated on anisland in the river, between Upper and LowerLough Erne .The Erne is linked to the
River Shannon by theShannon-Erne Waterway .The river takes its name from a mythical princess named "Éirne". The song "
