Seng Kang Primary School

Seng Kang Primary School

Seng Kang Primary School (zh-sp|s=成康小学|p=Chéngkāng Xiǎoxué) is a government primary school in Singapore, and is the first school to operate in Sengkang New Town. It started in 1997 at Upper Serangoon Road, and moved to its new premises at Compassvale Walk in Sengkang in 1998.

History

Seng Kang Primary School first accepted students in 1997, when it was still in Hougang, along Upper Serangoon Road.

In 1998, it moved to Sengkang and resumed operations at Compassvale Walk, in a new school compound.

In 1999, Compassvale Primary School, which was supposed to start operations in its new school building, shared the school compound with Seng Kang Primary. This was because the roof of Compassvale Primary School collapsed during construction and thus caused a delay in the completion of the school building. Compassvale Primary returned to its original building in 2000.

Intake

In 1998 when it first operated in Sengkang, being the only school then, it had an intake of 11 classes of 40 pupils in the first half of the year. In the second semester another class of 40 pupils was added to the already large cohort.

In 2001, many of the students in Seng Kang Primary transferred to Nan Chiau Primary School, which has a much more renowned history.

After more primary schools sprouted in Sengkang, the intake of students per year dropped, to an all time low in 2004, with only 5 Primary One classes, compared to 12 classes in 1998.

However, its pioneer Sengkang batch of 1998 graduated in 2003 with 15 classes, the highest in Singapore for that year.

After Foo Xiang Peng from Seng Kang Primary became the student with the highest PSLE aggregate in Singapore in 2004, Seng Kang Primary became much more renowned, leading to more parents finding out about its programmes. As such, the intake started to increase in 2005 and in 2007, there will be 11 classes in Primary One.

PSLE aggregates

A pupil in the school, Foo Xiang Peng, got the highest PSLE aggregate in Singapore with a mark of 285 out of 300 points in year 2004.

In 2003, the highest mark in the school came from Lee Kang Lin, with a mark of 264, compared to the highest in Singapore for that year, 282. In 2007, the highest mark in school came from Jeslyn Lim Pei Yun, also with a mark of 284, compared to the highest in Singapore for that year, 294, which was also the highest in record history at that time.
