Uxbridge branch

Uxbridge branch

The Uxbridge Branch of the Great Western Railway was first opened in 1856 as a spur off the Main Line from Paddington at West Drayton, running a few miles to Uxbridge Vine Street in the north. An intermediate station at Cowley opened in 1904.

There were several plans to extend the line, such as connecting it to the Metropolitan Railway branch to Uxbridge High Street or extending on to Denham. Ultimately these were all abandoned. Passenger use on the line dwindled, and Green belt legislation restricted the anticipated construction of new housing. In 1962 the line was closed to passengers, and in 1964 goods services were finally halted. The line and it's stations were demolished and built on.

Today there is virtually no trace that this was once a railway, other than the occasional bump in the road where the track once ran. [ [http://www.loveplums.co.uk/Tube/Uxbridge_Vine_Street_line.html West Drayton - Uxbridge Vine St ] ]
