It was built in 1972, and was officially inaugurated with an Aerolíneas Argentinas Boeing 737 flight on 3 January 1973. Construction started on the terminal on 9 June 1981 and ended 23 April 1987.
It has a 3,172 m² passenger terminal, 84,000 m² of runways, one 1,700 m² hangar and a parking place for 35 cars.
Since 1999, it has been operated by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000. In 2007, 44,477 passengers went through Catamarca Airport.
Felipe Varela was a militar born in Catamarca in 1821, who fought in the War of the Triple Alliance, and died in Ñantoco (Chile), in 1870. He is named "The Last Warlord".
