Gregory Rago

Gregory Rago

Gregory "Georgie" Rago (b. 1959) is a New Jersey mobster and "soldier" in the DeCavalcante crime family.

A resident in Bayonne, New Jersey prior to his conviction in 2002, Rago was reportedly inducted into the North Jersey-based DeCavalcante crime family after he, along with fellow soldiers Anthony Capo and Louis "Louie Eggs" Consalvo brutally murdered longtime Underboss Louis "Fat Lou" LaRasso, whose body has never been recovered, in 1991. Rago and Louis Consalvo, both friends and associates, began operating a Mott Street social club in New York during the mid 1990s, which held various criminal operations like loansharking, extortion and illegal gambling. However, this racket eventually led to a dispute between the New Jersey and the New York families.

At a sitdown in New York, reputed DeCavalcante crime family Acting boss, Giacomo "Jake" Amari and Consigliere Stefano "Steve the Truck Driver" Vitabile represented the family, along with Gambino crime family captain/street boss Nicholas "Little Nick" Corozzo and Colombo crime family acting consigliere Vincenzo "Vinny" Aloi, where the represantives of New York meant that Rago's operations should've gone to one of the Five Families, as those criminal operations were held in New York City, and not New Jersey. The conflict was eventually resolved peacefully when it was ruled the DeCavalcante crime family could no longer 'make' members outside of New Jersey and South Philadelphia, which was another area that the DeCavalcantes had traditionally recruited from. Rago began operating back in New Jersey, along with Consalvo, and held his criminal interests in loansharking, illegal gambling and extortion activities. But as Jake Amari died in 1997, and Vincent "Vinny Ocean" Palermo seized control of the DeCavalcante crime family that same year with a ruthless regime, massive indictments were put on 50 members of the family, including Rago, who was charged with operating various criminal activities, including the murder of reputed Underboss Louis LaRasso in 1991. Rago and Consalvo reputedly pled guilty and were sentenced to 20-25 years in prison in 2002. [http://www.ipsn.org/indictments/loren-maltese_indictment/decavalcante_indictment2.htm]

As of March, 2008, Rago is imprisoned at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Otisville, New York, same as Consalvo and other reputed members of the DeCavalcante crime family. His projected release-date is accordingly February 14, 2014.
