Sainik School

Sainik School

The 'Sainik schools' are a system of schools in India conceived in 1961 by V.K. Krishnamenon to rectify the regional and class imbalance amongst the Officer cadre of the Indian Military. The inspiration for Sainik Schools came from the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) which have given India many service chiefs and the public school system of England. Sainik schools can be regarded as the ordinary citizen's public school where deserving students can get high quality education irrespective of their income or class background. Seats are reserved for children of serving Defence personnel and concessions are given to children of Government officials.

The objective of the schools is to prepare the students to lead as officers in the Defence Services of the country. Along with the school students joining the armed forces, the alumni of Sainik Schools have excelled themselves in diverse walks of life. The schools selects bright and promising students through a national entrance examination and attempts to mould their overall personality with emphasis on extracurricular activities.

The Sainik Schools include an athletic track, cross-country track, indoor games,Parade ground , boxing ring, firing range, canoeing club, horse riding club, mountaineering club, trekking & hiking club, obstacles course, Football field , Cricket field and Basketball courts.

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Late Pattom Thanu Pillai, chose Kazhakootam to be the venue for Sainik School in the early sixties and an area of convert|300|acre|km2 of undulating terrain was acquired on a hillock, close to the National Highway. Presently convert|225|acre|km2 of land is held. The school is situated 18 km away from Trivandrum city on the National Highway 47. The sprawling campus, nestled between the slender strands of the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, is an ideal location for a military biased residential institution. The first-ever equestrian club of Kerala has been set up at the Trivandrum Sainik School. A full-fledged riding ring with horses and trainers has been set up to provide training in horse riding. The school came into being on 20 Jan 1962, in a few barracks lent by the Army at Pangode, Trivandrum. At the inception a total of 120 students joined the school in Classes V, VI, VII and VIII. Six months later Class IX began with 12 students. Present strength is 628 Cadets. The Founder Principal was Lt Col BK Somaiah. The Headmaster was Sqn Ldr Babu Lal and the Registrar was Capt TVS Nair.

The Foundation Stone was laid by the Late VK Krishna Menon, Minister of Defence on 05 Feb 1962. Prof. JC Alexander of the Engineering College, Trivandrum, was the ace architect who gave shape to the beautiful Academic Block and Eleven Dormitories. The school shifted to Kazhakootam in 1964.

The light blue, dark blue and red stripes in the School Crest are symbolic of the three main arms of the Defence Services and the integrated concept of training in the initial stages.

“Gyan Anushasan Sahayog” (Knowledge, Discipline and Co-operation) purports to inculcate sterling qualities in young cadets.

ainik School Kunjpura

Sainik School Kunjpura stands majestically sprawled on convert|275|acre|km2, amidst nature’s beauty in the land of ‘Mahabharat’ where Lord Krishna discoursed and enlightened ‘Arjuna’ with the knowledge of ‘Geeta’. The school, which is about 10 km away from the heart of Karnal city – The ‘Karna Bhumi’, was originally the mansion of the Nawab of Kunjpura, Mohammed Ibrahim Khan, who had built it in 1900 AD to house the marriage party of his daughter. This huge building was earlier the ‘sanctum sanctorium’ of the prestigious ‘Punjab Police Academy’. Sainik School Kunjpura came into being on the 24th of July, 1961, at the behest of the then Defense Minister of the country, Shri V K Krishna Menon who took personal interest in its inception and up bringing. He then handed over the ‘reins of command’ and put at the helm of affairs of Sainik School Kunjpura, a very able administrator, Col. E J Simeon who nurtured it for seven years as its ‘Founder Principal’. He was succeeded by Col. Munindra Chandra as the Principal, whose contribution in sending a record number of cadets from the 1969 and 1970 batches of the NDA.

Gradually, over period of time lot of additions were made – the junior block, the Infirmary, the cadets Mess, the Manekshaw Auditorium, the Simeon Squash Court, the swimming pool and then residential area for the staff and the boys. But the main building remained the ‘nerve center’ of the school with the administrative block, senior classrooms, computer cum conference room, library, general knowledge room and staff room etc in its vicinity.
