London Buses route 466 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.

History

Route 466 is primarily the old version of route 166 renumbered. Route 166 was planned to be diverted from its traditional terminus at Chipstead Valley to Caterham, which would have replaced route 400 (Caterham – Wallington), which was less frequent. Chipstead Valley would have been served by an extension of route 412. This however, took at much lengthier route to get to Croydon, resulting in a local protest. In the end, route 166 service was diverted as planned, but was renumbered 466, so the 166 number continued for the Chipstead Valley service.

There were also changes at the other end of the service. The "new" 166 ran to West Croydon, but the "old" one, the 466, had traditionally run to Shirley. In the summer of 1998 preparations for Tramlink led to substantial changes of the bus services there. At the time, the 166 was the main route to serve Shirley Way, and one of the changes was that route 466 was amended to only run as far as Shirley Library and Shirley Way, instead of it being served by route 194. In turn, route 466 was diverted at Trinity School to Addington Village. This served Addington Hills which would have been left without a bus route following the planned withdrawal of route 130.

The route was at first run by Arriva London, but 2003 saw major expansion for Metrobus, and during this is won the contract for route 466, from 30 August. It is run from Croydon garage and a batch of Scania Omnidekkas were ordered. These were the second batch for the company, following route 64's conversion to the type.

The contract for route 466 transferred back to Arriva London on 30 August 2008, using new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s.
