- Episcopal Diocese of West Texas
The Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is the
diocese of theEpiscopal Church in the United States of America whose territory comprises the southernmost part of the state ofTexas , including the cities ofSan Antonio ,Corpus Christi , andBrownsville . (The westernmost part of Texas, includingEl Paso , is actually part of theEpiscopal Diocese of the Rio Grande , which also coversNew Mexico .) Organized by a division of theEpiscopal Diocese of Texas in 1874, it had (as of 2006) 91parish es, 27,690 active baptized members, and an Average Sunday Attendance of 10,592. The diocese and its parishes sponsor twenty-sixparochial school s and preschools, includingTMI — The Episcopal School of Texas (founded as "West Texas Military Institute"), A boarding college preparatory school on the outskirts of San Antonio. The diocese was also instrumental in the founding of St. Philip's College, which became a public community college in 1942.The Diocese of West Texas is part of Province VII.
