footnotes = [ [http://www.stat.si/eng/index.asp Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia] ]Sava, today more commonly known as Stara Sava ("Old Sava") is a formerly autonomous settlement that is now part of the town and municipality of Jesenice, in the
Upper Carniola region ofSlovenia .History
The settlement was one of several that developed on the banks of the river
Sava Dolinka after1538 , when theironworks from thePlanina pod Golico area were moved here, closer to a stronger water source. Sava was mentioned as the site of an ironworks by the historianJanez Vajkard Valvasor in his "Glory of the Duchy of Carniola" in1689 .The core of the hamlet consisted of a number of buildings connected to the ironworks, the following of which have survived:
*theBucelleni-Ruard Manor
*theChurch of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Roch
*theKasarna , a worker's residential building
*remnants of a historic ironworks, including an intactblast furnace , its chimney, a mill, and part of the concrete mill trench [ [http://www.jesenice.si/dokument2.asp?id=1411&tip=pdf Paper on the church at Old Sava on Jesenice municipality site (in Slovene)] ] .The blast furnace ceased operation in 1897, and the entire area was more or less abandoned as it became trapped amongst the larger facilities of the modern Jesenice Ironworks and cut off from the rest of the town of Jesenice, into which Sava and the neighboring settlements of
Plavž (Jesenice)Plavž , Murova , and Javornik had been amalgamated by royal decree in 1929. The demolition of many obsolescent facilities of the factory during a phase of urban renewal in the 1990s exposed Sava again, and a new city plan for central Jesenice was drawn up, incorporating the historic district back into the town. The entire settlement has been declared a technical monument. The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and
Roch ( _sl. Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja in Roka), originally dedicated only to the Assumption of the Virgin, was built by the ironworks owners Julius and Orfeus Bucelleni. It is the first example ofJesuit architecture in Slovenia. Thenave , with a plaque dated 1606, still preserves its original features. The choir was expanded and raised in the late 17th century. Three altar pieces painted by the Venetian artistNicola Grassi from the church (The Assumption of the Virgin, Mary of theRosary withSt Dominic and St Francis [ [http://www.ng-slo.si/en/default.asp?id=269&prikaz=umetnina&ust=65 National Gallery of Slovenia site (in English) with image of Grassi's painting] ] , St Anthony of the Desert with an unknown early christianmartyr ) were all restored in 1961 and again in 1992. There are a number of other oil paintings in the church.References
