During the Second World War it was one of five Slovene settlements annexed by the Independent State of Croatia.[3] It is now included in the Spodnjeposavska statistical region.
It is not to be confused with the town and municipality of Jesenice in Northwest Slovenia.
The local church is dedicated to Mary Magdalene and belongs to the Velika Dolina parish. It was built in the mid 16th century.[4] It also contains the Mokrice Castle, now run as a hotel and golf course.
