- Standard Rex rabbit
The Standard Rex is a variety of
rabbit especially known for it's extremely softfur . A medium size rabbit, also a commercial, they can be between convert|7|-|10.5|lb|. It is prized for its fur and meat production. These areprolific rabbits having large litters with odd numbers of kits, often numbering between 6-10. They are known as good mothers and are used as foster mothers for other rabbit breeds. These rabbits have beautiful fur that is comparable in texture to very expensive sheared & plucked furs of larger animals, but they require no alterations to their fur beyond tanning. As rabbit is one of the healthiest USDA meats, the tanned fur offers a valuable & functional commodity for the home hobbyist or commercial breeder. Rex fur is a recessive genetic mutation that results in shortened guard hairs, the length of the down coat, which stick out from the body creating a plush velvet coat. The resulting coat is short and very dense, and is what would be called undercoat on a normal furred rabbit. They are full of personality and can make lovely pets. This breed is also referred to as a "Velveteen" rabbit.Varieties
