Government Center, Miami, Florida

Government Center is an area in Downtown Miami, Florida, so named due to the concentration of Miami-Dade County and state government buildings in the area. The area is located north of the Brickell Financial District, bordered roughly by West Flagler Street to the south, North Miami Avenue to the east, Northwest Third Street to the north, and Northwest Second Avenue to the west. The square on Northwest First Avenue between First Street and Flagler Street, adjacent to the Miami-Dade Cultural Plaza is the center of the neighborhood.

History

Government Center was developed in the late 1890s as a terminal station when Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) was extended to Miami from West Palm Beach. Development continued with the construction and completion of the Dade County Courthouse in 1926. The area experienced a rival beginning in the late 1970s with the addition of the Stephen P. Clark Government Building, Metrorail, and the Miami Cultural Plaza, which includes the Miami Art Museum, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Miami Main Library.
