Sherwood State School

Sherwood State School is a state primary school in the suburb of Sherwood, located in Brisbane's western suburbs. The school currently enroll's students from Prep through to year 7.

[http://www.sherwoodss.eq.edu.au Sherwood State School] is over 140 years old and the school buildings are in keeping with the heritage character of the local area. Behind the heritage exteriors are air-conditioned classrooms with modern computers and internet connections.

The school grounds are large, and encourage a diverse range of sports and play. There are also generous undercover play and eating areas. The sports facilities include:

* Pool
* Cricket Oval
* Tennis and Basketball Courts
* Grassed Netball Courts and
* Soccer Fields

A Nature Area adjoins the school pool, and is used regularly by students, especially for the longstanding Friends of the Nature Area FONA) Club.

A large heritage style Hall, complete with a wide veranda and polished timber floors, is utilised as an assembly area for school activities, as well as before and after school care and many community based events.

The fully air-conditioned school library was extended and refurbished by the Parents and Citizens Association in 2004, and includes many computers to access the latest information. It is also very well stocked with great student literature.

The music program is resourced with instruments not found in many schools – timpani, French horns, tenor saxes, bass clarinet and double bass for example, as well as many of the more traditional instruments supporting an exceptional instrumental music program. The music room is also well-stocked to provide students with the resources to build an appreciation of music.

History

The school has a long history and was originally was known as West Oxley State School and opened on March 25th 1867 (other records indicate 23rd March).

The first head teacher (Headmaster) appointed to the school was Major William Jenyns Boyd. He was born in Paris on 1842 and migrated to Australia in 1862.

In 1868 Oliver Radcliffe was the first name on the roll as a pupil/teacher.
