LAP was organized the Paraguayan Air Force in 1962 and began services in August 1963 using three
Convair CV-240 aircraft. Services included flights toRio de Janeiro ,Buenos Aires ,Montevideo , Santa Cruz andCuritiba from the Paraguayan capital ofAsuncion . The CV-240s were replaced byLockheed L-188 Electra acquired fromEastern Air Lines and were used by LAP for over 20 years. In 1975 a route toLima was inaugurated. The pure jet age came in 1978 with the purchase of two
Boeing 707 fromPan American Airways and with those services toMiami began. When another 707 was bought, services toMadrid ,Brussels andFrankfurt began in November 1979. The 707s were eventually replaced by Douglas DC-8-63 series aircraft and then in 1992 a Douglas DC-10-30 came into service. Since LAP was a government losing company, attempts to privatize were not fruitful and the money losing operation was shut down in 1994.
