Harkin ran for President in 1992 as a populist with labor union support who criticized George H.W. Bush for being out of touch with working class Americans. Harkin was from Iowa and had been a senator there since 1985 so almost none of the candidates campaigned there knowing they would lose.

Tom Harkin easily won the caucus with 76% of the vote uncommited got second place with 11% and in third was Senator Paul Tsongas with 4% in 4th was Governor Bill Clinton with 2%.
