Johannes Gabrielse

Johannes Gabrielse

Johannes Gabrielse a Dutch artist born in Zeeland, Netherlands in 1881 and who died in a Japanese interment camp in Dutch East Indies in 1945.

Well known for his illustrations of Indonesia for Dutch school books as well as wall prints (School platen) published by the publishers Wolters from Groningen. He also is remembered for his sketches of life in the Japanese camps during World War II. Some of his work is kept at the Dutch museum Museon in The Hague.

He was however more than just a school illustrator and has produced a number of paintings in oil. He sketched extensively with his sketches produced in a book form just before the war.

Mary Margaret Gabrielse

Born in Tjimahi, Indonesia in 1923 and in 2008 was still alive. She is the niece of Johannes Gabrielse. She also was an artist and interned in the Japanese camps of WW2. She survived as did a number of her colour illustrations reflecting camp life in the women's camp and now at the museum Museon.

Her other work produced after the war is in private hands. She was not prolific due to family responsibilities but with her habit of illustrating her letters to her very large correspondence contacts has ensured that her work is well spread and in many hands.
