The 1988 Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the seventh edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee. The competition in Seoul, South Korea was held from September 17 to October 2, 1988.
The preliminary matches were held at the Hanyang University Gymnasium and the Saemaul Sports Hall from September 17 to 26. Semifinals, finals and classification matches were held in a cross-match according to the order of places in the preliminary matches from September 27 to October 2 at the Jamsil Students' Gymnasium in the Seoul Sports Complex.
Qualification
South Korea qualified as the host nation, the United States as the defending champion from Los Angeles, California. The Soviet Union finished second at the 1985 FIVB Men's World Cup, while Bulgaria participated after finishing second at the 1986 World Championships. France (Europe), Japan (Asia), Tunisia (Africa) and Brazil (South America) were the continental representants. Argentina won the Olympic Qualifier in 1987. Sweden and the Netherlands each came through in one the two Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, held in the Netherlands and Italy from May 20 to May 25, 1988. At the last event Italy won the play-offs (2-1) against PR China for Cuba's place.
