Evelynn M. Hammonds

Evelynn M. Hammonds (PhD, 1993, Harvard, Department of the History of Science) is the recently-appointed Dean of Harvard College.

Hammonds has been at Harvard a [http://fas.harvard.edu/~hsdept/bios/hammonds.html Professor of History of Science] and of [http://aaas.fas.harvard.edu/faculty/evelynn_m_hammonds.html African and African-American studies] , and has [http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/daily/2005/07/20-hammonds.html led a committee (to which she was appointed by former Harvard President Lawrence Summers2) focusing on improving searches for female faculty at Harvard to ensure women get fair consideration for promotion] , and to explore ways to support them in meeting family demands. The Harvard's announcement of her appointment talked about "targeted searches as a means of enhancing gender diversity on the faculty."

Her undergraduate work in physics (BS, 1976) at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, was followed by graduate work in physic at MIT in Cambridge, MA (SM, 1980, Department of Physics).
