- Bob Hendley
Charles Robert Hendley (born
April 30 ,1939 in Macon, Georgia) is a formerMajor League Baseball pitcher . Hendley was signed by the Milwaukee Braves as an amateurfree agent in 1958. After the 1963 season, Hendley was traded to theSan Francisco Giants in a six-player deal; one of the three players the Braves received wasFelipe Alou . OnMay 28 ,1965 , Hendley,Harvey Kuenn , andEd Bailey were traded to theChicago Cubs ; coincidentally, Bailey was another player traded for Hendley in the Milwaukee-San Francisco deal. Later that year, onSeptember 9 , at Los Angeles'sDodger Stadium , he threw a one-hitter, but lost toSandy Koufax , who threw aperfect game (to date, the lastno-hitter pitched against the Cubs). Oddly, the one run he gave up in the game did not come on the hit. Five days later, the two pitchers faced each other in a rematch atWrigley Field . This time, Hendley gave up only four hits and defeated Koufax 2-1.In a 7-season career, Hendley was 48-52 with a 3.97 ERA in 216 games, 126 of them starts. He struck out 522 batters in 879 and 1/3
