Ávvir

Ávvir

"Ávvir" is a Northern Sámi language newspaper that is the result of the merger between two Northern Sámi newspapers: "Min Áigi" og "Áššu". Although Ávvir is currently published three times a week, plans have been made to publish it 4–5 times a week in the future, i.e., from Tuesday to Saturday. The first edition of Ávvir was published on Sami National Day, i.e., February 6, 2008 [cite web |url= http://lotta.yle.fi/srwebanar.nsf/sivut/samimediat?opendocument&pageid=Content65D79-5 |title= Aviissat ja bládit |accessdate=2008-03-07 |format= |work= Sámi mediat |publisher= YLE Sámi Radio |language=Northern Sámi] The newspaper's offices are located in Kárášjohka and Kautokeino.

The word "ávvir" means 'care' or 'attention' in Northern Sámi [cite web |url= http://kaino.kotus.fi/algu/index.php?t=lekseemi&lekseemi_id=25380 |title= Ávvir |accessdate=2008-03-07 |format= |work= Álgu database |publisher= Research Institute for the Languages of Finland] . The name was proposed by Laila Susanne Vars of Láhpoluoppal in Kautokeino.
