Johnny Lucas

John Charles Lucas [Buster] (February 10, 1903 - April 16, 1932) was a backup outfielder who played briefly for the Boston Red Sox in the 1931-32 seasons. Listed at 5' 10", 186 lb., Lucas batted right-handed and threw left-handed. He was born in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Little is known about this LF/CF who played on a Red Sox uniform with few stars. The team finished 62-90 in 1931 and 43-111 in 1933. Only 533,125 fans came to see them play at Fenway Park that seasons. In a four-game career, Lucas went hitless in three at-bats. He did not have fielding chances in two outfield appearances.

Lucas died in Maryville, Illinois at age 29.

Right and left

Lucas was one of those rare players who were not primarily pitchers in major league history who threw left-handed, but batted right-handed. Other such players include Dick Adams, Doug Ault, Bobby Balcena, Rube Bressler, Mark Carreon, Hal Chase, Johnny Cooney, Eddie Gaedel, Rickey Henderson, Cleon Jones, Jason Lane, Brian Lesher, David McCarty, Luis Medina, Chucho Ramos, Cody Ross and Jimmy Ryan.
