St. David's High School

St. David's High School

St. David's High School is a school in Bukit Baru, Malacca, Malaysia.

History

"St. David's High School got off with a modest start as a “mission project” in 1912 in Malacca. Dr. (Mrs.) Fergusson-Davie, wife of the then Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore, started the St. David's Mission Hospital in Tranquerah. Not long after, this Mission Hospital was closed after the war, when the government expanded its medical services. A Chinese school was run in its place but this was closed on government advice after a few years.

Then came the big, bold step. At a special meeting of the Christchurch Parish Committee in 1956, the idea of building a school St. David's High School was conceived and agreed upon. The prime mover behind this project was a retired naval commander who was also the Diocesan Secretary, Commander Hudson.

Five and a half acres of land was acquired at Bukit Baru the present site of the school. The government laid down a rather disturbing condition, viz. if the school was not built by the end of the 1950s the lease would be revoked.

In 1959, Dr. F.J.A. Rawcliffe, the then Chief Education Officer with the approval of Tun Razak, the then Education Minister, carried out the plans.

Not long after, a school board was formed in the same year, with Mr. Saurejen as the Acting Principal.

The initial enrolment of one hundred and sixty pupils in Form One had to borrow the premises of Malacca High School and had to meet in the afternoon.

In mid 1960, the pupils were moved to Bukit Baru after four classrooms had been constructed.

1961 saw the completion of the three storey block. In the following year, a few more class rooms were added to it.Officials in the Ministry Education then began to realize the great potential St. David's possessed and a further two and a half acres of land was leased to the school in 1964 for the playing field.

In 1966, a hall and an Industrial Art Block were built. Then in 1975, a new Science Block was built. This magnificent block marks the completion of the building programme of St. David's and it has been proposed that it be named after Mr. P.V. Jacob, our ex-Headmaster who had initiated the programme.
