Athletics
The mascot is the bulldog and school colors are black, red and silver. Butler is a Charlotte athletic power in many sports. Most notably in softball where the school has claimed many titles. The football program is also somewhat successful, but only has two division titles due in large part to the success of Butler's great rival Independence. In 2007 Butler won the division title in football, beating Independence in the regular season. Butler beat Independence in both the regular season and in the regional playoffs in 2009 and won the 4AA State Championship title at Carter-Finley Stadium on December 12th 2009. The team went on to repeat the next season defeating Wake Forest-Rolesville 44-0. The team finished both the 2009 and 2010 seasons nationally ranked in the top ten in multiple polls. Wrestling
Butler's wrestling team is also successful. The team finished 4th in the NCHSAA 4A dual team tournament during the 2007 - 2008 season. During the 2008 - 2009 season Butler went to the 4A dual team state finals. Butler beat Northwest Guilford in the quarter finals and then went on to wrestle Concord Robinson. During the last two weight classes in the match against Concord Robinson, Ranson Lee pinned his opponent to tie the score and Austin Long followed with a pin to the win match and advance to the finals. Butler went on to wrestle against Cary High School (36-0) in the finals. Unfortunately Butler fell to Cary by a score of 43-13 and finished 2nd place with a 21-4 record. Butler was not only an un-ranked team that season they were also the first Charlotte team to make it that far since 1998 when Independence, coached by Billy Puckett (now the current Butler coach) lost to Cary.
Butler's wrestling coaches Mark Puckett and Billy Puckett are two of the best coaches in all of Charlotte[citation needed] and are often referred as the Puckett dynasty at Butler High School. 2009-2010 season - Dalton Cunningham: 114-22 Tom Puckett: 48-3 Stephen Amoah: 25-7 Nate Charest Charest: 40-11 Andrew Allison: 25-22 Drew Gooden: 18-25 David Tiderman: 33-11 Ronnie Rindone: 12-14 Robert Jenkins 13-13 Jacob Stowe: 25-8
