Charles Samuel Jackson

Charles Samuel Jackson

Charles Samuel "Sam" Jackson (September 15, 1860 - December 27, 1924) was a prominent newspaper publisher in the U.S. state of Oregon.

Born in Deltaville, Virginia, Jackson went west in 1880, settling in Pendleton, Oregon. There he became publisher of the Pendleton-based East Oregonian, developing it into a successful regional paper.

In 1902, a group of influential Portlanders persuaded Jackson to move to Portland to revive the failing Portland Evening Journal. Under his direction, the paper was renamed the Oregon Journal, and succeeded as the main competitor to Portland's daily paper, The Oregonian. In his first editorial at the helm of the paper, he declared that the Journal would in "head and heart stand for the people" and that it would not be a "dull and selfish sheet."

Jackson led the Journal as owner, publisher, and editor until his death. His son Philip succeeded him.

In 1917, Jackson donated 88 acres (356,000 m²) on Marquam Hill in Portland to the University of Oregon Medical School; the site, then known as Sam Jackson Park, is now the campus of the Oregon Health & Science University.

Jackson was inducted into the Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1979. Jackson Tower is named for him.
