Peace Commissioner

Peace Commissioner is discretionary appointment in Ireland by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The title replaced Justice of the Peace in 1923. Peace commissioners are primarily used to witness signatures on documents, take statutory declarations and sign certificates and orders. Peace commissioners can also issue search warrants to the Gardaí. As of 2005 there was 6,808 peace commissioners in Ireland.
