Ontario ,Canada is a smallairport serving thegeneral aviation needs of the area. The airport was established in 1941 as an air training base for theBritish Commonwealth Air Training Program . The base was operated by theDepartment of National Defence (Canada) until the late 1940s as a relief field for Aylmer and Fingal. It has three pavedrunway s in the triangular pattern typical to the era.The airport is classified as an
airport of entry byNAV CANADA and is staffed by theCanada Border Services Agency . CBSA officers at this airport currently can handlegeneral aviation aircraft only, with no more than 15 passengers.The airport was purchased by the City of St. Thomas in 1970. The runways were originally all approximately 2,640' in length, but the main east west runway (09/27) was expanded to 5,050' in 1982.
The airport is in
uncontrolled airspace but has a UNICOM operating during working hours on 122.70 MHz.There is one
flight training school operating out of the airport, in addition to numerousagricultural aircraft in the summer.In 2002 St. Thomas reported 27,456 aircraft movements, however over the following years the numbers dropped. In 2003 there were 17,371, followed by 13,720 in 2004 and 12,575 in 2005. In 2006 there were 944 movements reported during a 24 day period in January and no more reports were made for the rest of the year.
