West Pike Run Township is a township in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,925 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 16.3 square miles (42.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,925 people, 774 households, and 564 families residing in the township. The population density was 118.2 people per square mile (45.6/km²). There were 824 housing units at an average density of 50.6/sq mi (19.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 94.03% White, 3.95% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population. 11.8% were of German, 11.7% Hungarian, 10.2% Polish, 8.8% American, 8.7% Irish, 8.7% Italian, 6.0% Slovak and 5.3% English ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 774 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the township the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $32,069, and the median income for a family was $37,024. Males had a median income of $38,274 versus $28,403 for females. The per capita income for the township was $15,988. About 12.0% of families and 13.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.
