Jason Lai (born 1974) is a British born Chinese orchestral conductor. He was assistant conductor of the BBC Philharmonic from 2002 to 2005.

Biography

Early years

He started his musical studies at the age of 12 when he took cello, piano and composition lessons, which continued with the help of a scholarship at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. In 1993 he was awarded a Hadow Scholarship to study at Worcester College, Oxford, where he became music director of the Oxford University Philharmonia. On completion of his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama he was awarded a Masters in composition and a Diploma in cello.

2002 onward

Lai was the winner of the BBC Young Conductors Workshop in February 2002 and has been awarded the post of Assistant Conductor at the BBC Philharmonic. He has also worked with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, English Touring Opera, London Sinfonietta, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Singers. From 1998-2000, he was the Conducting Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His appearances have included conducting duties at The Proms.

Other works

In 2007 he was one of the judges in the BBC reality series "Classical Star". In August 2008 Lai was scheduled to appear in the reality tv talent show-themed television series, "Maestro" on BBC Two, as a mentor to Sue Perkins who won the competition.cite press release
