Brothersvalley Township is a township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,184 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 62.7 square miles (162.4 km²), of which, 62.7 square miles (162.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.03%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,184 people, 862 households, and 712 families residing in the township. The population density was 66.7 people per square mile (25.8/km²). There were 917 housing units at an average density of 14.6/sq mi (5.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 69.50% White, 24.69% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 3.78% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.62% of the population.

There were 862 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.9% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.3% were non-families. 14.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the township the population was spread out with 14.4% under the age of 18, 16.1% from 18 to 24, 43.7% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 248.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 294.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $40,119, and the median income for a family was $42,022. Males had a median income of $25,023 versus $21,389 for females. The per capita income for the township was $11,611. About 5.8% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 1.7% of those age 65 or over.
