- Bubaqra
Bubaqra is a small, rural area in
Zurrieq , in the south-east ofMalta . It is situated between the zones of Nigret and Hal- Far. Even though it is one of the oldest areas in this village, a lot of new buildings are being constructed and this area is searched most by newly-weds who come to live in this quiet, airy area. At the centre of this zone, a small church is situated, dedicated to our Holy Mary.A few metres away, there is also the churchyard of this village dedicated toSt. Leon .A lot of Maltese mock the name of this area since in Maltese the name literally means 'Boo the cow'. However, the real name of this area came from BUBAKRA coming from BAKKAR, meaning 'to wake up early'. This is because since this area consists a lot of fields and rural areas, yesteryear, the people of this zone used to get up early ot start working on their fields.
A popular tower which carries the zone's name, the 'Bubaqra tower' is situated on the outskirts of this zone. This tower was built by the Knights of St. John and served as a spot from where to see the enemy approaching by sea, since this area is situated very near to the sea. Unfortunately, nowadays this exceptionally beautiful tower is in private hands, probably of a foreigner and is nowadays for sale.
