Cretan Airways

Cretan Airways was a planned airline to be based in Heraklion, Greece that never started revenue flights. It is not to be confused with the earlier Cretan Airlines, an airline also based in Heraklion that went bankrupt in the mid 1990s.

Company history

Soon after Air Greece was taken over by Aegean Airlines, its previous owners established Cretan Airways as its successor. They planned to commence operations before the end of 2000, connecting Heraklion with Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes. However, Cretan Airways was not granted the required operations license by the Greek civil aviation authority (YPA) and was therefore prevented from flying. As a result, the two ATR-72s which had been leased and painted in the company's colors were returned to the lessor.
