From 1958-02-25 the Embassy in Damascus was reclassified as a Consulate General and the mission was re-established as an Embassy on 1961-10-10.

Syria severed diplomatic relations with the U.S. on 1967-06-06. The U.S. established a U.S. Interests Section on 1974-02-08 in the Italian Embassy with Thomas J. Scotes as Principal Officer. The Embassy in Damascus was re-established on 1974-06-16 with Scotes as Charge d'Affaires ad interim.
