"Hate It or Love It" is the second official (third overall) single from rapper The Game's debut album, "The Documentary". The song was blocked from the #1 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart by The Game's fellow G-Unit member at the time, 50 Cent (who is also featured in this song), with his song "Candy Shop" (featuring Olivia). "Hate It or Love It" peaked at #2 in 2005, and reached the #1 spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The track uses a sample from the song "Rubber Band" performed by The Trammps on their album, "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart".

"Hate It or Love It" was nominated at the Grammy Awards of 2006 for both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, but lost both awards to Kanye West's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" and the Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk with My Heart", respectively.

It was named number one on about.com's Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2005.It was also placed at 41th on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs.

Music video

The setting of the music video alternates between New York City and Los Angeles. The video showcases the rough childhoods of 50 Cent and The Game. It shows where they come from, what it was like living in their neighborhoods, and the struggles they overcame as kids to become rappers. Two kids portray them in their youth, and in one scene these two children are caught spraying "N.W.A." on a wall, causing their subsequent arrest by two policemen.

This video was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards of 2005 for Best Rap Video, but lost to the video for Ludacris' song "Number One Spot".

Remixes

There have been a several remixes done of the track:

*One appears on 50 Cent's album "The Massacre" as "Hate It or Love It (remix)", featuring the rest of the G-Unit members: Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo. The first time the chorus is performed in this version, it is identical to the original, but the consecutive choruses have 50 Cent's line followed by another member of G-Unit rapping The Game's original line. While 50 Cent's opening verse and bridge are included in this version (though the bridge is altered), The Game's second verse is omitted and replaced with new lyrics.

*Mary J. Blige covers the song on the single "MJB Da MVP" from her multi-platinum album "The Breakthrough", with 50 Cent rapping his chorus line and Blige continuing with an altered version of The Game's original line. Additional verses by both The Game and Mary J. Blige follow.

*There is also a remix on The Game's mixtape, "You Know What It Is, Vol. 3", remastered into a dis towards G-Unit called "Hate It or Love It (Street RMX)". Here, The Game's second verse from the G-Unit remix is modified with new lyrics in order to insult the G-Unit members.

*The Re-Up Gang featured a remix of the track on their mixtape, "". The song features the four members of the group rapping about their troubles in the past.
