Iranian Queer Organization pGLO is an engineered
plasmid used inbiotechnology as a vector for creatinggenetically modified organism s. The plasmid contains severalreporter gene s, most notably for thegreen fluorescent protein (GFP) and the ampicillin resistance gene. GFP was isolated from the jelly fishAequorea victoria . Because it shares a bidirectionalpromoter with a gene for metabolizingarabinose , the GFP gene is expressed in the presence ofarabinose , which makes the transgenic organism fluoresce underUV light . GFP can be induced in bacteria containing the pGLO plasmid by growing them on +arabinose plates. Adding arabinose to a liquid culture is less successfulFact|date=April 2007.The pGLO plasmid was made famous by researchers in
France who used it to produce a green fluorescentrabbit namedAlba (rabbit) .Other features on pGLO, like most other plasmids, include: a selectable marker, Ori (
origin of replication ), and an MCS (multiple cloning site ) located at the end of the GFP gene. The plasmid is 5371base pair s long. In supercoiled form, it runs on anagarose gel in the 4200-4500 range.[ [http://www.rlc.dcccd.edu/mathsci/reynolds/micro/lab_manual/transformation.html Bacterial Transformation ] ]
