The ORCA Grant Program, administered by the Office of Research and Creative Activities (ORCA) at Brigham Young University (BYU), exists to encourage mentored research at the undergraduate level for all fields of study at the university. Funds comes from both private and university donors (e.g., BYU Alumni Association) and vary each year; however, ORCA aims to furnish 1/3 of applicants each year with a grant.[1] The ORCA Grant currently awards $1,500 to the student recipient and $300 to the mentor.[1] In the 2010-2011 academic year, the university awarded $457,500 to 375 undergraduates whose research proposals merited grants.[2]
All ORCA Grant recipients are required to submit a report at project's conclusion, which is published in the BYU Journal of Undergraduate Research (JUG). Additionally, most students go on to publish ORCA Grant-related research in professional academic journals–an accomplishment that propels many to pursue an advanced professional career.[3] BYU is ranked #8 nationally for the number of students who go on to earn PhDs, #1 national producer of dental school-bound students, #6 national producer of law school-bound students, and top 10 producer of medical school-bound students.
