He was schooled at
Cranleigh School , Surrey. He was educated atMagdalene College, Cambridge where he was awarded an MA degree in Social and Political Sciences andImperial College London where he earned an MBA. Before entering parliament, he served in theBritish Army with theGrenadier Guards and worked as an investigativejournalist withITN ,World in Action , Panorama and the Sunday Times. During his military career he saw active combat in the Gulf War.Parliamentary career
He was elected in the 2005 General Election for the
Kent constituency of Gravesham, defeating the Labour minister,Chris Pond by just 654 votes, acquiring one of the largest swings from Labour to Conservative in the country at 4.9%. This was the first time since theSecond World War that Gravesham (or its predecessor, the Gravesend constituency) had not been held by the party of government.He made his maiden speech on 28 June 2005.
