- Australian College of Theology
The Australian College of Theology, was established in
1891 by the thenGeneral Synod of theChurch of England inAustralia . Its headquarters are located inSydney ,New South Wales In 1899, there were four awards of the College - the Associate in Theology, the Licentiate in Theology, the
Scholar in Theology , and theFellow of the College of Theology - and about 30 students.Today the College offers a wide range of accredited higher education awards catering not only for the specialised needs of ministerial and missionary candidates but also for the needs of lay people interested in an understanding of the Christian faith and its implications for contemporary life.
There are currently almost 20
higher education awards on offer. Approximately 2000 students are currently enrolled and studying in the affiliated colleges and with the college itself.Students study at one of the approved teaching institutions, but only the Australian College of Theology is authorised by the Australian Government to grant degrees. The advantage to the Approved Teaching Institutions is that they don't need to go through the red tape, administration that the Government legislation involves; the Australian College of Theology does this for them.
