Wilkes-Barre Area School District is a public school district located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The district includes the city of Wilkes-Barre as well as smaller surrounding municipalities. As of the 2007-2008 school year, Dr. Jeffrey T. Namey is the district superintendent. James L. Coughlin is currently the largest school in the district housing over 1100 students. Meyers High school houses around 949 students and G.A.R has around 917 students. There are currently 5 elementary schools, 3 high schools and one junior high school in the district. There is also one charter school that lies within the school district. The Bear Creek Community Charter School opened in 2004. This school is housed at the site of the former Bear Creek Elementary School, which the district closed in 2002.
