Detroit, Michigan in theUnited States ) is aguitarist ,songwriter and is probably best known as a founding member of the American rock band Sponge. He is currently a member ofThe Detroit Cobras . He graduated from Mount Clemens (Michigan) High School in 1973.Forming Sponge
Joey Mazzola, a
Detroit native, spent five of the hardest years of his life on theLos Angeles club circuit. When he decided to return home he hooked up withVinnie Dombroksi , with whom he had played earlier in his career. Almost a year after the Loudhouse breakup (Vinnie and the Cross brothers original band), around the end of 1992, Mazzola sat in on a jam session above a Detroit drugstore with Dombroski and the Cross brothers, Tim & Mike. The four clicked and Sponge was formed. Since Sponge had already formed before actually finding a singer, Dombroksi filled in at the mike temporarily, but so impressed the Mazzola & the Cross brothers that they agreed to make him the singer. With the addition of drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, Sponge was born.Joining The Detroit Cobras
After leaving sponge, Joe played in a few different bands around Detroit, including Crud with Vinnie Dombrowski. Eventually he joined the up and coming
Detroit Cobras , truly fitting into the bluesy rockabilly sound the Cobras were known for.At first Joe played bass with the Cobras on the "Baby" CD. Shortly after, he began playing guitar for them.
