The Siege of Byzantium was the last major effort of the Persian Empire to retain control of Greece. A campaign was fought by the Hellenic League under command of the Spartan regent Pausanius, in which the Persians were compelled to surrender [Thuc. Peloponnesian Wars, 1.95-97.] , thereby losing control of Thrace.

Following the battle the Greek allies rebelled against Pausanius, claiming his behaviour was tyranical, and allied themselves with Athens. As a result of this, Athens formed a new League of Allies (called the Delian League by modern scholars), with the intention of gaining revenge upon Persia for Greek losses and hardships. The Delian League is thought to be the beginnings of the Athenian Empire; many scholars claim Athens grew to the height of its power through monetary contributions of the League. [Powell, A. Athens and Sparta: Constructing Greek Political and Social History from 478.] [Rawlings, H. "Thucydides on the Purpose of the Delian League".]
