As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 5,468 people, 2,091 households, and 1,390 families residing in the borough. Thepopulation density was 7,191.7 people per square mile (2,777.9/km²). There were 2,246 housing units at an average density of 2,954.0/sq mi (1,141.0/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 71.07% White, 24.80% African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.There were 2,091 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 17.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.24.
In the borough the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $42,436, and the median income for a family was $48,146. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $29,049 for females. The
per capita income for the borough was $18,503. About 10.6% of families and 11.0% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.Transportation
Sharon Hill is connected to
Upper Darby, Pennsylvania , by the 102 trolley at its Sharon Hill terminus. It also has a train station on the
R2 Regional Rail Line.Chester Pike (US-13) runs through the borough providing easy access into and through Sharon Hill.Education

Cardinal John Patrick Foley grew up in Holy Spirit Parish in Sharon Hill and was ordained a priest in 1962. In June, 2007, he was named Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem by Pope Benedict VI. Prior to that appointment, Foley was President Emeritus of Pontifical Council for Social Communications and Titular Archbishop of Neapolis in Proconsulari. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on 24 November 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI.
