January 14 ,1957 ) is a painter,photographer ,musician , andauthor who lives inSan Francisco and Shanghai. Min'smemoir , "Red Azalea ", and her subsequentnovel s are either semiautobiographical or reflect a particular time inChinese history with an emphasis on strongfemale characters, most notablyJiang Qing , the wife ofChairman Mao , and Empress Dowager Cixi, the last ruling empress of China.Born in Shanghai, Min was sent to a
