"Saroja" (2008) is a critically acclaimed Tamil film written and directed by Venkat Prabhu, who also directed the film Chennai 600028. The film revolves around the adventures of four carefree friends who are forced into a life-threatening situation. T. Shiva produced the film under his "AMMA Creations" banner. Shiva, Vaibhav Reddy, Premji Amaran, S. P. B. Charan, Vega Tamotia, Kajal Aggarwal, Sampath, Nagendran, Prakash Raj and Jayaram star in the lead roles. "Saroja"'s score and soundtrack were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who is Venkat Prabhu's cousin. Critics in India and overseas have called "Saroja" a "refreshing tale," praising its direction, editing, and screenplay.

Plot

Ajay Raj (Shiva), a TV serial artist; Ganesh (Premji Amaren), a fun-loving man who falls in love with every woman he sees; Jagapathi Babu (SPB Charan), a married man with a six-year-old daughter; and Ram Babu (Vaibhav), Jagapathi's courageous younger brother; are close friends who spend a lot of time together in Chennai. One day the four friends decide to go in Ajay's old ramshackle caravan to Hyderabad to watch a cricket match.

Viswanath (Prakash Raj) is a business tycoon in Hyderabad who has no time for his wife and teenage daughter Saroja (Vega Tamotia). One day, Saroja is kidnapped, and the police enter the scene, with ACP Ravichandran (Jayaram) handling the case.

Meanwhile, a huge tanker lorry carrying highly inflammable and dangerous chemicals overturns on the National Highway between Chennai and Hyderabad and the four friends are stuck in a massive traffic jam.

They attempt to take a shortcut to Hyderabad, but they end up in a dark, desolate area where their real troubles begin. They become entangled with the affairs of Sampath (Sampath), the leader of the gang that kidnapped Saroja.

Ajay, Ganesh, Jagapathi, and Ram are now forced to hatch a plan to rescue Saroja and escape from the gang's lair alive. They manage not to lose their sense of humor along the way.

Reception

The film received highly positive reviews worldwide. For both younger and older audiences, "Saroja"'s apt casting, editing, and crisp dialogues represented a welcome change from standard Tamil cinema. It was a huge box office hit as well, making it Venkat Prabhu's second successive super hit after Chennai 600028. The song Kodaana Kodi became very popular.

Trivia

"Saroja" featured a promo song, becoming the third Tamil film following "Subramaniapuram" and "Poi Solla Porom" to have one. It has an English track written and composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and sung by Tanvi Shah.
