V. C. Andrews . It is the third entry in the Landry Series.Plot summary
It begins begin with Ruby Landry and her daughter Pearl, having fled New Orleans and returned to the bayou. Paul Tate, Ruby's half-brother, tries to convince her to marry him so he can take care of Ruby and Pearl. Ruby eventually agrees after she is almost raped by Buster Trahaw. Octavious Tate, Paul's father tries to convince Ruby not to marry Paul, but she does anyway.
Ruby's twin sister Giselle appears, bringing three pieces of news- Uncle Jean had committed suicide at the institution, Daphne had died in a horseriding accident, and Beau Andreas, Pearl's father, had broken up with his fiancé in France. Some point after she goes back to New Orleans, Giselle marries Beau. Ruby and Beau soon begin an affair.
Giselle becomes deathly ill with no chance of recovering. Beau and Ruby take advantage of this situation to pretend Giselle is Ruby and vice versa. Paul is not happy about it, but goes along with the plan. Ruby finds it difficult to act like Giselle, and Paul becomes convinced himself that it really was Ruby who died. He is found drowned in the swamp.
Gladys Tate, after Paul's death seeks revenge on Ruby, as she knows it was really Giselle who died. Most of the town in the bayou believe Paul to be Pearl's father, so Gladys tries to get custody of Pearl. At the hearing, Ruby reveals who she really is, and Octavious tells the court that Gabriel Landry was Paul's mother, not Gladys. Ruby and Beau keep custody of Pearl.
The book ends with Ruby having twin boys, Pierre and Jean, named for Ruby's father and uncle respectively.
